Группа основана в 1968 году в Миннеаполисе, Миннесота, как White Lightning. В состав вошли гитарист Каплан («Zip» Caplan), басист Вуди Вудрич (Woody Woodrich), ударник Гарр Джонсон (Garr Johnson). 

Джонсон покинул группу, его заменил Мик Стэнхоуп (Mick Stanhope).

В конце 1968 года группа записала сингл «Of Paupers And Poets»/ «William», изданный фирмой Hexagon.

В 1969 году в состав группы вошли гитарист Ронн Робертс (Ronn Roberts) и перкуссионист Берни Перши (Bernie Pershey).

Название группы сократили до Lightning.

В январе 1970 года музыканты записала одноименный дебютный альбом, который издала фирма Pickwick.

Продюсером группы стал Боб Тиле (Bob Thiele). Музыканты заключили контракт с фирмой Bluesway.

В 1968 году вышел дебютный альбом «Outlaw Blues Band And The People».

Гонсалеса заменил басист Лоуренс Диккенс (Lawrence Dickens).

Этим составом группа записала альбом «Breaking In» (1969), и распалась.
